Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the issue of human rights obligations relating to the enjoyment of a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment

52nd session of the Human Rights Council

Thursday 9 March 2023

Thank you, President.

Action Canada makes this statement on behalf of the Sexual Rights Initiative.

We welcome the report presented by the Special Rapporteur on the issue of human rights obligations relating to the enjoyment of a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment. We also want to thank the Special Rapporteur for the civil society consultations he held to inform this report and for the comprehensive scope of the report. We emphasize that it clearly points out the interrelationships between gender oppression and environmental degradation.

We especially appreciate the statement that women and girls are not only victims but make huge contributions to protecting the environment and should be viewed as equal and indispensable partners and leaders in decision-making processes towards a more sustainable, just and livable future.

The exploitation of persons is unacceptable and the looting of nature is unsustainable. In order to be able to guarantee an environment in which human present and future generations can live and thrive, several unjust, violent, exploitative, synergistic oppression systems ought to be dismantled. A deep and wide transformation in the economy and in our relation to nature is needed. None of this can be achieved without the full, equal, and substantive participation of women and girls.

Thank you.
